Matching with aggregate externalities

چکیده
Certain aggregate externalities, like those due to knowledge and public goods, do not change very much in response to changes in two individuals’ actions. Thus, individuals rationally regard the level of the externality as fixed in their negotiations with each other. We leverage this observation to develop a general framework for the existence of stablematchings inmoderately sized one-to-onematching games, and we characterize intuitive restrictions on preferences that are sufficient for existence © 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Appendices to “ A Field Study on Matching with Network Externalities ”
In Appendix B, we inspect the trade-off between efficiency and fairness of outcomes across different classes of faculty . Also, under some simplifying assumptions, we estimate the welfare generated by commonly used variations of the serial-dictator mechanism in the presence of network externalities. In Appendix C, we detail the ant-colony algorithm used to search for optimal assignments with ex...
متن کاملHuman Capital and Externalities in Cities
We combine growth theory with US Census data on individual schooling and wages to estimate the aggregate return to human capital and human capital externalities in cities. Our estimates imply that a one-year increase in average schooling in cities increases their aggregate labor productivity by 8 to 11 percent. We find no evidence for aggregate human capital externalities in cities however. Our...
متن کاملIndeterminacy in a model with aggregate and sector - specific externalities
We present a two sector dynamic general equilibrium model with both sector-specific and aggregate externalities. We find that including the aggregate effects allows for a trade-off between the sizes of the two types of externalities needed for indeterminacy. 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
متن کاملIdentifying Human-Capital Externalities: Theory with Applications
The identification of aggregate human-capital externalities is still not fully understood. The existing (Mincerian) approach confounds positive externalities with wage changes due to a downward sloping demand curve for human capital. As a result, the Mincerian approach yields positive externalities even when wages equal marginal social products. We propose an approach that identifies human-capi...
متن کاملMatching with Externalities
We incorporate externalities into the stable matching theory of two-sided markets: We establish the existence of stable matchings provided that externalities are positive and agents’ choices satisfy substitutability, and we show that the standard insights of matching theory, such as the existence of side optimal stable matchings and the rural hospitals theorem, remain valid despite the presence...
